DN450 Floating Flanged Rubber Expansion Joint

DN450
The DN450 Flanged Floating Rubber Expansion Joint is a high-performance, single-sphere flexible connector designed for demanding piping systems. This expansion joint effectively absorbs vibration, compensates for thermal expansion and contraction, and accommodates multiple types of pipe movement, including axial compression, axial extension, lateral deflection, and angular deflection.
The floating flange design features loose steel flanges that are separate from the rubber body, allowing for easy alignment with existing pipe flanges and compensating for bolt-hole misalignments during installation. Because the flanges are free to rotate, installation remains straightforward even when mating flanges are not perfectly aligned.

Key Specifications – DN450 (18")
The nominal diameter is DN450, corresponding to 18 inches. The face-to-face length (L) is 255 millimeters. In terms of displacement compensation capability, the axial compression is 25 millimeters, the axial extension is 16 millimeters, the lateral deflection is 22 millimeters, and the angular deflection is 15 degrees. The working pressure ratings cover PN10, PN16, and PN25, corresponding to 1.0 to 2.5 megapascals, with burst pressure ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 megapascals depending on the specific rating. The product can withstand a maximum vacuum of up to 100 megapascals (750 millimeters of mercury). The standard operating temperature ranges from -15°C to +115°C, and with special rubber compounds, this can be extended up to +250°C.
Construction & Materials
The expansion joint consists of multiple composite layers. The inner tube (liner) can be manufactured from natural rubber, nitrile rubber (NBR), EPDM, or neoprene, depending on the service conditions. The reinforcement layer is constructed with multiple plies of nylon tire cord, providing the required pressure-bearing strength. The outer cover is also available in the same range of rubber materials, offering excellent weather and ozone resistance. The assembly includes hard steel wire retaining rings, and the floating flanges are available in carbon steel (with zinc plating or coating) or stainless steel AISI 304/316.
Features & Benefits
The floating flange design is a key advantage of this product. The loose steel flanges rotate freely, significantly simplifying bolt alignment and effectively accommodating drilling misalignments in the piping system.
The product offers multi-directional movement compensation capability, simultaneously addressing axial compression, axial extension, lateral deflection, and angular displacement. This protects connected equipment such as pumps, valves, and compressors from additional stress and damage.
The elastomeric body provides excellent vibration damping and noise reduction, significantly attenuating mechanical vibrations and reducing noise transmission through the piping system.
Lightweight construction, combined with the floating flange design, enables quick and straightforward installation and maintenance without the need for specialized tools.
The product also demonstrates strong corrosion and chemical resistance. Depending on the medium being conveyed, different rubber compounds can be selected: EPDM offers excellent weather and chemical resistance, NBR provides outstanding oil resistance, and neoprene serves as a versatile alternative. This allows the expansion joint to handle a wide range of media, including water, seawater, steam, oil, acids, and alkalis.
Typical Applications
This expansion joint is widely used in water and wastewater treatment plants for pump connections and process piping. It is also commonly found in HVAC systems for chiller and pump isolation. In the chemical processing industry, it handles corrosive media with appropriate elastomer selection. Other applications include industrial piping systems carrying compressed air, steam, and cooling water, fire protection systems for pump and valve connections, and power generation facilities for cooling water and auxiliary systems.
